Burn Pods

A New Concept for Class A Live Fire Training

These pre-cast Burn Pod modules or rooms are made in our plant and delivered to your site. They arrive ready to be added onto your existing training building, and are placed on a previously cast concrete foundation. Within a day or two you have a new burn room. Burn Pods come fully lined with System 203 giving you the protection needed for live fire training.

Some of the best training we’ve witnessed.

In the following videos Captain Jason Wehmeyer and Alexandria Fire Department training staff demonstrate phases of fire (incipient to flashover) and fire behavior.  This critical training is facilitated by using an observation burn cell in which fuels typically encountered on a fireground are allowed to propagate to flashover.  A second burn cell with a front wall, door and window allows staff to demonstrate vent limited fire, fuel limited fire, uni-directional and bi-directional flow and transitional fire attack.

We all know that realistic fireground conditions cannot be created using Class A materials in non-combustible burn buildings.  Since NFPA 1403 allows only Class A materials for training in live fire training structures, recruits are not exposed to the kind of environments encountered with modern content fuels.  Exposing students to fires with contents such as foams and plastics is critical to establish an important respect for the environment they will encounter on the job.  Students must understand that live fire training structure fires are conducted with the limited purpose of challenging search and rescue, ventilation and suppression drills.  Live fire training structure fires are not intended to develop “realistic” fireground conditions.

Many training divisions use flashover containers to expose recruits to pre-flashover conditions to train personnel to identify flow path, heat movement and  smoke characteristics in order to recognize the danger signs that would warrant evacuation.  Unfortunately, this compartmentalized observation exposes personnel to potentially hazardous and unhealthy environments even when donning full PPE.  Further, such training can be simultaneously delivered to a relatively limited number of people while  observational training using burn cells allows dozens of students to participate in the same exercise.

HTL believes burn cell demonstrations as seen in the following videos are critical to comprehensive firefighter training.  However, construction and replacement of wood framed burn cells is labor intensive and expensive as materials are expended with each demonstration.  HTL is therefore offering permanent BurnPod Cells using the same technology we have used for many years in our BurnPod fire training structures.  Our oldest BurnPods are 16 years old and still in great shape.  This technology allows fire departments to repetitively deliver this critical observational training with little preparation.
